Recent study details health risk as girls reach puberty earlier

Updated: Jul 27

Recent study at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health concluded self-reported data showed girls are having their period earlier. The percentage of girls getting their period before age 11 doubled and the percentage of girls getting their periods before age 9 more than doubled!

What are possible causes:

  • Endocrine disruptors - beauty products, food products/containers

  • Environmental toxins - pollution

  • Childhood trauma and stress

  • Overweight/obesity

  • Genetic factors

What are some of the possible health implications of early puberty?

  • Infertility

  • Cancer

  • Heart Disease

  • Diabetes

  • Mood disorders

What can mothers do?

  • Follow up with your childs pediatrician.

  • Consult with a registered dietitian who specializes in girls and women's health

  • Engage in physical activity with the entire family on a regular basis.

  • Make eating healthy and fun for your child - make breaded zucchini or carrot baked fries, or homemade fruit-based desserts, mold food in shapes of their favorite toys or characters, etc.

  • Focus on whole foods, majority plant-based, with a variety in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Avoid/limit ultra-processed foods, sugar sweetened beverages and desserts, processed meats (deli meats/cold cuts), etc.

  • Replace toxic beauty, cleaning and self-care products with clean items. Learning to read labels is important as many advertised "clean" products are not really clean.
